Thanksgiving

Umm...in this season of Thanksgiving, I wanted to reflect a bit on what I am thankful for. To my readers, what are you thankful for?

1. Relationship with God. Without God, there wouldn't be much purpose to my life, and I would just be working because society deems that appropriate for a person my age. So, with God I have purpose, significance and worth, and that means everything to me.

2. My family. Although sometimes it's difficult to get along with my parents, I know that they love and care for me and have done their best in raising me. My bro and sis have taught me many things growing up (mainly through me observing them), and I appreciate them for who they are.

3. RW. Community is very important to me, and having a community such as RW has been a tremendous blessing. RW is a place where I feel accepted, and where I feel very comfortable being myself. I feel and experience the joy of serving alongside bros and sis committed to the Lord.

4. Friends. Hmm...what would life be without being in friendship/relationship with others.

5. Job. I am pretty thankful for the place where God has placed me now at Serverworks/Broadcom. The job fits me pretty well, and I feel like I'm growing as a professional (although slowly...).

6. Challenges. I am thankful for challenges, situations where I am forced to step out in faith, and trust the next steps to God, beit relationally, financially, intellectually, physically, socially, etc.

7. Laughter. I love to laugh and make other people laugh, even though sometimes they laugh at me.

8. Shared experiences. Although I'm an introvert, being with people seems to make life more full, as again, being in friendship with people is important and having shared experiences builds history into a friendship.

9. Bball/working out. There's no better feeling than after a good workout or good runs of bball.

10. My faithful readers. Affirming each of you out there. Without each of you...well...how would my page counter go up? =P...hehe.

Overall, Thanksgiving provides me a time of self-reflection on where I am at in life. I look forward to having fun and also resting from the hustle and bustle of life. =P.

Weekend Recap

Short weekend recap.

Friday night's RW bible study was great. We discussed vision, as we looked at Abram in Genesis 15. A couple key take-aways. As young adults, we struggle a lot with calling and vision. Abram had a clear call and vision, and made a lot of mistakes even with a clear vision in mind. One peace I have is knowing that God's purposes will be fulfilled no matter what, and it's my choice if i want to go along with those purposes, or stand along the sidelines. I trust that God has awesome plans for me. Overall, I need to be faithful where I am at now, and sit at Jesus feet. After RW, we went to the Nuthouse to celebrate Shannon's passing of the Bar. Congrats to Shannon. Drinks were on her that night.

PESI pal Christine and "fun" Judy along with Ken were also at the Nuthouse. Pretty random seeing them there. I felt pretty extroverted that night, so I did a lot of talking and laughing. Always great to celebrate with people the good things that are going on in their lives.

Sat. morning, I went running with Nancy at Rancho, and then had lunch with her on Castro Street. Afterwards, I went home to shower, and then get changed to head up to SF for Spencer's b'day get together (Ice skating at Yerba Buena Gardens near the Metreon.) Last time I went ice skating was for Will's b'day. Mikey, Ralph, Julie, Sherise, Spencer, Jonathan, Kathy, Ellie, Will, Dave, and Josh were there. The key to ice skating is to get skates 1-1.5 sizes smaller than usual. That adds to control. I could definitely sense the difference.

For dinner at Buca, some of the people took off and it ended up being 6 guys. After dinner, Will dropped me off at the SF doghouse for swing dancing with other RWers (Nicole, Kathleen, Jenny, Samantha, Edie and Bun). We arrived early enough for the lessons, and I learned the basics of the lindy follow. It's easier to follow when I know how to lead the basics. Nicole took the class as a lead. Now we can interchange. Jenny and Kathleen are hooked onto swing now and will be taking lessons at Swing Central soon. I have discovered that definitely the more I go swing dancing the more moves I remember. I got complimented by this random girl that I'm a good lead. Yeah, affirmation!!!!! We do miss Tina, who is in med school at UCSD from our RW swing dancing crew, and she would be so happy to see many peeps from RW are going swing dancing.

After swing, I headed home, got some Jack in the Box, and got to bed at like 2 a.m.

Went to church, and then played bball at Paly. There has been a lot of trash talking now going on at bball at RW. It has only occurred recently, and I don't think it's very edifying. I engaged in some of this too, so I need to be more mindful of it. The comfort level of the people there is increasing, as everybody sorta' knows everyone else's game well, so more trash talking occurs. I discovered that I play better when I don't force the issue. Playing in rhythm, then in forcing up shots (which I do pretty often). I still need to work on the Assist-TO ratio. 3 girls came out to play which was great. Some guys really don't know how to play with girls on their team and that's actually quite sad, as the girls lose interest if they're not involved in the game.

After bball, headed home to shower, ate dinner at home to celebrate my maternal grandpa's b'day and then headed off to Julie's place for her b'day celebration. Lots of peeps were there, and it was a lot of fun. We had a cake decorating contest, and frankly, I'm not very creative. Even when describing our cake, my jokes weren't funny. =(. I need to work on them more. We were able to use spinkles, skittles, cookies, gummi bears, etc. to decorate the cake. Jeannie, Dave, Will and Jason made a great cake, creating a red convertible with Julie and Mikey in the car. They also made a street light and Dave said, "Mikey and Julie are waiting for the green light for marriage." Extremely funny. 2 eprops for Dave.

We also played "will you buy my donkey?". The premise of the game is to have a person be a donkey merchant and a person be a donkey. It's a "smiling/laughing" game, where the donkey merchant goes up to someone and asks, "Will you buy my donkey?" The person needs to respond without laughing, "No, I will not buy your donkey." Then the merchant goes, "my donkey can do..." blah, blah, blah. 2 memorable moments. A) Joyce was the donkey merchant, and Jonathan was the donkey. Joyce went up to Will and told him that her donkey could dance. Jonathan busted out some dance moves, and Will laughed when Jonathan did a "chest" shake. Go J-sun. Too funny. I was laughing so hard at this time. B) Lani was the donkey merchant and I think Nancy was the donkey. Lani went up to Mike and asked if he would buy the donkey. Mike said no, and asks Lani why he should buy it. Lani goes, "I know you haven't had a date in a long time..." Oh man...freaking hilarious...and a bit harsh...but hey...Mike was a really good sport. He pretended to cry and said, "I won't buy your donkey now that you have insulted me." Too freaking funny. Alright, fun times...not as edifying as I imagined though.

Next game, the adverb game. This game has two people leave the room and the rest of the group choosing an adverb to act out scenes that the 2 people come up with. The first adverb was bootiliciously. Julie and Lani were sent out of the group and came up with Christmas scenes for bootiliciously. Umm...the 3 wise men...bootiliciously. Oh man...freaking hilarious. The next adverb I suggested, "mike ho'ly". In the joke of the night, Mikey goes, "bootiliciously and mike ho-ly are synonyms." Oh man...freaking hilarious. We love Mike "Shock and Awe" Ho. A really good sport. =P.

We then spent some time praying for Julie, and that was great. It's good to be in a community where we can have fun together and also pray for one another as a corporate body. I love my community of RW. Overall, a packed but fun weekend.

Deep thoughts coming soon. The post is not as short as I intended. =P. Pics from Spencer's/Julie's party coming soon.

My Purple Shirt

Hmm...so I have had my purple shirt, the one with a hoodie on it, for awhile. It didn't occur to me that it isn't a good color for guys until I recently got laughed at by my PESI pals. Now, reflecting back, my co-worker also made a sarcastic comment before, but I didn't understand what he was talking about. Anyways, now talking with other people, who have seen me wear this shirt in the past, they also have laughed at me without telling me anything. Why didn't anyone tell me before? =P. Oh well...

Life Giving Joy of the H.S.

One of my favorite bible study series at RW was that on the Holy Spirit. We had this short series before retreat. I have been asking myself if I have been experiencing the life giving joy of the H.S. I think the past couple weeks, I have made myself so busy, that I haven't.

I am reminded of my spiritual state when I went to grad school part-time and worked full-time. I would be so exhausted from the rigors of work/school life, that I didn't have much energy or passion to experience God at a deeper level. I'm feeling a lack of energy these days too and a red flag has gone up in my head.

So, I think physically, although I have been exercising, I need more sleep. No more staying up too late, chatting on IM or checking fantasy bball. =P. When I'm better rested, my times with God are more enriching, my quality of work improves, and overall, my quality of life improves. =P.

I definitely want to experience the life giving joy of the H.S. and not this "same old, same old" type of mentality. =P.

One song I hear on Christian radio, has a phrase of giving me more life in my day, not the concept of more days in my life (not to say that more days to life is bad...but you know what I mean). I want to live life to the fullest potential.

Weekend Recap

On Friday, at RW, we had a bible study in which we looked at like 6 passages besides looking at the Abram text in Genesis. It was pretty intense as there was lots of the Word to go through. The challenge again of financial stewardship.

In the morning, my aunt and uncle, grandpa and youngest cousin came over. Deanna is my youngest cousin's name, and I wrote a bit about her before in a previous entry. I really like babies, and this time she didn't cry when I held her. Working with her to be able to give people "five."

After dim sun lunch, I headed to the ball tourney. Since it was raining, I thought the bball tourney was going to be cancelled, so I considered working out in the morning. It wasn't cancelled, since it cleared up some, and we got to play. Unfortunately, we only got to play two games. I played with King, Jeff, Samantha (king's younger sister) and Jessica (king's co-worker). Jeff and King are both taller and bigger than me, so in both games a girl was covering me. In the first round game, I had like a clear weight advantage over the girl defender. I scored the first 3 buckets of that game on put back rebounds, and scored 2 more times. We had a bye for the next round, and then in the championship game, we played another team that had 2 guys, 2 girls. It was pretty fun, but also pretty dangerous as we had to play through rain. Anyways, 4 eprops for Serena (also the tourney coordinator), as she covered me. I have known Serena for awhile, but I have never played bball with her before. She is actually quite rough, so best be careful. Although I still had a clear size advantage, man, that girl played me in the post pretty well. I would have to say her post play is more physical than most guys when they play against me. She got upset at me, as I pushed her pretty hard out of the post. I told her to call a foul, but she didn't. When people make comments about my aggressive play and such and don't call fouls but instead complain, I get a bit upset. They should just call a foul instead of making comments. Anyways, we ended up winning that game in non-climatic fashion, but at least we won. I would have preferred to play more games though. I also had the chance to be a ref for 4 A-league games. It is actually much more difficult than I first imagined. It is easier to call fouls and determine ball possession when I'm part of the action then when I'm observing it.

Anyways, I ate a hot dog and a hamburger at the free BBQ at the bball tourney, and then headed home. I went swing dancing at Stanford with Nicole, Kathleen, Jon and Walter. The night before in Redwood City there was a dance event that 12 RWers went to after RW. I didn't go, but Nicole was extremely excited that so many people went. Anyways, Swingkids was putting on this event. As the wood was hardwood, those people without dance shoes (i don't intend to ever buy dance shoes...), had to dance in socks or barefoot. When you dance swing, there is a lot of pounding into the floor, so by the end of the night I was pretty tired and my feet were very sore. Luckily, I wore clean socks that night...hahaha. =P. We stayed from like 8 p.m. to 1 a.m. During the free lessons, I was a "follow". I used to have issues dancing with other guys, but I have since overcome them. However, during the lessons as we rotated and stuff, I could sense that the "leads" were feeling a bit weird, like how I used to feel before I felt comfortable dancing with guys. =P. Anyways, I still need to work on being more confident in myself and asking random girls to dance. I'm still too shy...=P.

Got home after dancing, and was hungry, so got some food from Jack in the Box, and stayed up a bit watching "Robinhood" which was on TV. Ended up feeling quite tired.

After church, headed to play bball with RW, along with Chi-an and Chi-yu. We had 5 on 5, and I had too many TOs during the 2nd game, almost like 10. Not good. We lost that game. I need to work on my assist-turnover ratio. Jonathan had a couple of good clearing out moves in Mike Ho, like lowering his shoulder and bowling Mike over. Dangerous stuff. We had some good runs though.

It was my dad's b'day on Sunday, so then we went out to dinner at this new place near Monta Vista High School and De Anza College across from the Post Office on Stevens Creek Blvd (Tory's restaurant). This Chinese restaurant recently moved to this area, and will try to attract business away from Top Cafe, as it is open till 2 a.m. in the morning. Dinner was good with family. After dinner, just headed home and chilled out, caught up on some school reading, and watched CSI. =P. Will process some thoughts in my next entry.

Thoughts

Anyways, after taking more MBTI tests, and trying to get the results to INTJ, here is my personality type...XXTJ. I am pretty close on E/I and S/N. And have tested multiple ways. Anyways, the teacher said that ideally with any type, as we mature, the strength of our preference is 0-15%. =P.

Last night we studied self-concept and self-esteem.

4 areas that comprise the whole-self.
1) physical
2) mental/intellectual
3) emotional
4) social

In secular psychology they don't talk about the spiritual self, so I'll throw that in there too. =P.

The key to a healthy "self-esteem" is UNCONDITIONAL acceptance. =P.

How to improve self-esteem:
1) take care of yourself (TCOY)
2) don't depend on others for feeling good about yourself
3) accept positive in you
4) get in touch with whatever hurts you or gets you down
5) learn to be humble and accept that you are not perfect
6) accept yourself and others unconditionally
7) recognize that you control self-image
8) don't let others set your standards
9) recognize unrealistic goals
10) modify self-talk
11) emphasize your strenghts
12) work to improve yourself
13) approach others with a positive outlook

Overall, doing some of the self-concept, self-esteem tests, I think I have a pretty healthy outlook on life and happy with who I am. A lot of it deals with being comfortable in my identity in Christ. It took me awhile to work through many identity issues...=P. However, I am still trying to grow myself in being able to take more risks, especially relationally. Sometimes I am an introvert, but other times I am an extrovert. I'm trying to find that good balance.

Anyways, some other fun facts, key tips to fighting alzheimers in aging individuals:
a) physical exercise, b) support group, c) active lifestyle and positive outlook on life.

Been busy so haven't had much time to blog. Thanks for reading.

Funny tidbit: As I got my allergy shots today, I get my shots in my upper arms, the nurse goes, "wow...very muscular." The time in the gym pays off. =P.

Weekend Recap

I haven't been to RW bible study in awhile and going friday was good. We had 5 people in our group, definitely one of the smaller studies we have had. Anyways, one takeaway was that God's will/plan will always be accomplished no matter what we do or do not do. We studied Abram and how even though he lied about Sarai (what would be fair was that he would have lost sarai and not receive all these blessings from pharoah, but yeah)...lucky Abram. I was reminded just how good God is and how even the pillars of faith, Abraham, Peter, David, were human just like us. Also, I thought it was pretty messed up how Abram didn't stand up for Sarai (very non-chilvarious).

On Sat., Christine and I headed up to San Leandro to help Randy and Krystal move. We moved two houses (Randy's mom's place and his place) worth of stuff into a new house that Randy and Krystal bought. We moved from like 9:15 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. It was extremely tiring, as we moved like 4 washing machines, a couple refrigerators, countless desks, etc. Randy's mom also likes to collect rocks, so we were moving boxes of rocks. There was this exercise bike from Sears from like the 60s that Randy's mom had and it's total mileage was like only 598. Randy also had like 3, 5-drawer file cabinets that we moved too. Heavy stuff. =P. Too funny. It was fun playing with "Buttons" their dog. I did get to drive a GMC truck (first time driving one), and we got to drive "Buttons" from the old house to the new one. When I braked too hard, Buttons slipped off the back seat and onto the floor. She didn't get upset though. =P. Although I am allergic to dogs, I like them. Their new home is beautiful. =P.

Anyways, after moving, and being exhausted, we headed back to Christine's place in Mt. View, and I ended up playing some guitar with Iris and enjoying their cable TV. I could waste a lot of time sitting in front of cable TV. Anyways, we went to dinner at Korea House, after picking up Timmy (Cynthia's little bro). Mel, from RW, and other PESI folks from her year were there too. Such a small world. I said melanie's name like 3 times, and then played it off since she didn't acknowledge my presence, and then said it a 4th and then she finally said hi. What's up with that? Dinner was good, and then we headed to "fun" judy's place in santa clara. Judy had no furniture in her place, so we sat on the floor watching the end of moulin rouge. iris made some funny comments, but i won't post them here. you can ask her yourself. i wanted to go home as i was pretty tired after a full-day of moving, but we ended up staying there till like 10:30 p.m.

On Sunday, I went to CBCSJ. I haven't been there in over a month. It was good to be at a place where I am comfortable worshipping in. After church, headed up to Foster City for Cathy's housewarming party. I became an "extrovert" as I didn't know any of the people there besides Cathy. I give myself 2 eprops for branching out. =P. After the housewarming, I thought I would play bball with RW, but I was running late, so picked up Kathleen and headed to Will's place for evening festivities with RWers. We went to watch Matrix III at the IMAX in SF. We got up to the city around 6:15 p.m., picked up our tix. and then ate at some "Mr Chau's" wannabe restaurant for a quick eat. We threw around ideas for the GX/RW joint talent show. Our best idea was of Mike sitting still for 5 minutes. =P.

We got in line for the movie at 7:20 p.m. and it was pretty awesome to see it on IMAX. Overall thoughts on movie was that it was fine. Nothing too exciting or deep, and the romance portion...yeah...go Neo!!!! Some of the movie didn't make sense, and I need to rewatch 1, and 2 now to get full closure from the whole trilogy. However, the most exciting part was in the beginning where they showed where exactly all the speakers sit behind the IMAX screen. Cool stuff. Got home around 11:45 p.m., ending another weekend...=P.

Thoughts from the Week

I haven't been blogging as much as usual, so I apologize to my readers. Thanks for your faithfulness in reading.

Anyways, a couple thoughts.

8 Simple Rules

I liked this sitcom before, and this past week's episode dealt with John Ritter (the father figure) passing away. He was portrayed as passing away from running an errand in the grocery store. The episode dealt with how the various family members were dealing with his death. It was quite a moving episode. The grandparents on the mother's side, moved in to help the grieving process. Anyways, during the 1-hour episode, I'll admit it, I was crying quite a bit. I guess the sadness dealt in the reality of him passing away.

Rain after a good workout

One of my favorite things is to walk out of the gym at night time when it is raining. Last night was one of those days. I left the gym around 12 a.m. The reflection of the raindrops against the parking lot lights just brings me such peace and happiness. I'm not sure why. =P.

Class learnings

We studied MBTI this week in psych class. I tested as an ISTJ. Honestly, I do have some ISTJ tendencies, but I'm more comfortable being an INTJ, plus it's less common. N and S are the hardest two to test for. I like being an INTJ. But yeah...REMEMBER NOT TO BOX ANYONE IN BY THEIR MBTI...we have had some discussions at RW on this...=P.

Anyways, one fun fact, is that 72% of the world's population are "E", extroverts. Quite interesting. 76% of the world's population are S's. =P.

Most uncommon types, INFJ, INTJ, INFP, INTP (only 1% each).
Most common types: ESTP, ESFP, ESTJ, ESFJ (13% each).

Matrix this weekend. Yeah. =P.

Expectations

I have discovered that I get more readers when I post relationship stuff...hahaha, so here are more thoughts.

I realized why I have such a hard time dating women...(insert joke here...hehe). It's about expectations. I feel it's ironic that the older I become, I actually have higher standards on what I am looking for in a life partner. However, instead of looking at it as higher standards, I guess I would view it as having a better understanding of what I need and desire in a lifelong partner. I guess I appreciate the clarity in knowing what qualities are important to me. Sometimes I feel that maybe my standards or requirements are too much, that nobody could meet them, but then I realize I don't want to compromise or settle because I am getting older. I trust God has a good plan for me, beit being married or staying single.

Anyways, I think one reminder that a friend told me once that I remind myself is that "I rather be single than marry for mediocrity." =P.

Thoughts from the Sat. Party

Hmm...in college, I never went to any fraternity/sorority parties of any sort. I never saw what that "scene" was really about. I guess this party on Sat. was pretty eye-opening for me, as I seek to grow and learn through new experiences and different environments.

Anyways, when we first arrived (Christine, Iris, Judy and myself), we discovered that it was a costume party, but nobody told us. Some of the costumes the girls were wearing were...let's just say...SKETCHY. As we didn't really know many people at the party, we just walked to the patio area where the alcohol was. I saw a jug (orange type that usually has that McDonalds orange drink) dispenser that said "Water" on it. Well, it wasn't water, but jungle juice. Some mix of vodka with fruit punch soda. There was also a keg of beer in the area.

I have been thinking why drinking is so popular among young adults. Any thoughts from my readers?

For myself, the taste of alcohol is neutral to me. I drink to sorta' fit into the social scene because my friends do it. (hmm...I guess that would be called peer pressure). Also, part of myself drinking is to release myself from the legalism that surrounds it in Christian circles. This legalistic type of attitude I developed during college (go CEF), and since have become much less legalistic. =P. I feel that drinking is okay, as long as you don't get drunk.

I guess, when I do go to a bar, I want to patronize the establishment, because I have an intrinsic value that when I go somewhere, like study in a coffeeshop or hangout somewhere, I should patronize the establishment. Anyways, to me drinking seems like it is just the thing to do. Like having a job, it's like the thing young adults do.

Anyways, I digress.

Back to the party. Overall, I felt pretty uncomfortable there because all that was going on was talking, drinking and smoking. However, when people asked if I was having fun, I would say yes. I guess, since it was eye-opening to me, that was the fun part.

I was thinking that it would be a "stretching" experience to try to talk with some random people, but I just didn't feel it was much of my "element." I think it deals with how comfortable I felt. I didn't feel very comfortable because it was a place in which I didn't know many people. I guess mentally knowing lots of people helps me to feel more comfortable because it allows for me to "build bridges" to knowing people. I think what would help to build connections is when people would introduce me to other people, then that would allow at least some open door to communicate.

Anyways, a lot of our group conversation dealt with, "why don't you go and talk to so and so?" or "why don't you make a move on so and so?" Very interesting. No depth to any of our discussions. =P.

I guess overall I felt the party was okay. I think I would prefer something more active. =P.

This is a pretty random entry. =P.

Weekend Recap

Quick weekend recap. Had a great time at the Fang-dango party. Dressed up as "bad-alvin" wearing a black graduation gown and a red hat to go along with a "A" across the gown. Ming-Gih dressed as Simon. =P. Later in the night I changed to a nun since Tilden and Chee Chee were one too. =P. Mimi and Tilden throw fantastic parties, with so much food. Way to go!!!!! The dancing portion was excellent too. Very fun. 2 eprops for Jason and his "risky business" costume, where he 3 layers of tidy-whities so that if people pulled them down he had extra. =P.

Ended up getting to bed quite late on Friday night as I helped Ming-Gih move stuff back and forth from Tilden/Mimi's place.

Sat. morning, pretty chill at home, as had to do some research on a couple things. Went up to San Leandro for Deanna's 1 year old birthday party. There were like over 230 people that attended. Crazy. Deanna is my youngest cousin, making 16 of us grandchildren. She was adopted by my Aunt Connie and Uncle Calvert from China about 2 months ago.

We spent a good 3 hours at the restaurant. I headed home after, and then took a 1.5 hr. nap. After, headed over to have dinner with Christine, Iris, Shane, Cynthia and Judy. I know Christine/Iris from PESI. Anyways, after surfing the net and teaching Iris some guitar, we went to Shane's co-worker's house party in Foster City. Pretty random and spontaneous to go there, and pretty eye-opening for me. More thoughts on this party later.

Headed home around 1 a.m., and watched Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle till like 3 a.m. in the morning.

Sunday, went to church at GRX for 1st time. Very trendy place is how I would characterize it. More thoughts on this later. Had lunch with Shane, Christine, my sister, Judy, Cynthia, Emily and Michael Chang (yes, the real one). Christine grew up in the same church as Michael and he was speaking at a couple places in the Bay Area this past weekend.

After lunch headed to play bball at Paly with RW, and then headed home. Had dinner with family, watched some TV, and took care of some errands.

Another great weekend. =P.
