Thursday, October 28, 2004 Two Years... Today is my official 2-year anniversary at Serverworks (my division at Broadcom). Time sure flies. =P. posted by alvin | Thursday, October 28, 2004 Thoughts... What does it mean to settle, especially in regards to relationships? I like this definition: "To move downward; sink or descend, especially gradually." Totally out of context, but pretty funny. I think this one is much better, "To accept in spite of incomplete satisfaction." What defines complete or incomplete satisfaction? When two broken people come together, will there ever be complete satisfaction? When is a relationship/marriage out of settling or that of waiting for "God's best?" Even in a job situation, it's easy to feel not completely satisfied, but how much job satisfaction do you need? As young adults, especially Gen. Xers, it's very easy to feel unsatisfied. Our mentality is, "How can I most benefit from this?" I would venture to say that a high percentage of young adults are unsatisfied with their life. Why this feeling of dissatisfaction? I think it's our desire to really feel that we could be living up to our potential. In the past couple weeks in fellowship and retreat, we have been exploring the ideas and concepts of God's calling. I think the real question to ask is "What is God's calling at this stage of life?" A couple thoughts for me: 1) Be the best engineer I can be. 2) Understand and develop my spiritual gifts and ministry skills to reach the point of convergence. 3) Continue to challenge myself in ways to stretch and grow my faith and dependence on God. 4) Build strong relationships/networks for a solid foundation of spiritual/mental/emotional/intellectual friendship base. On Relationships... I realized that lately, most of the people I am hanging out with are dating officially. It's different than before. I notice now if I'm the only single person in a group, or if certain activities have more "couples going." It's quite interesting. There are some couples, who make me feel uncomfortable hanging around them (excessive PDA, focused on each other, etc.). I guess, as you get older, you see more of your friends start hooking up, getting married, starting a family, etc. You have less and less single friends, so you start clinging to them more. Anyways, so, this gets me to my point of settling. I think it is more difficult as girls get older, and the pressure is greater to get married, and definitely greater to settle. On my recent trip to China, we discussed some of these things, and picked the brains of the married folks. Randy kept emphasizing, "it was worth the wait." Anyways, my own philosophy, as I discussed before, "it is better to be single, than to marry the wrong person." In the midst of all this pressure, sometimes it's easy to cave in, and be with someone who isn't the right person. It's quite sad. Don't settle. Wait for God's best. It is worth the wait. And even if you never get married, it is worth the wait. posted by alvin | Thursday, October 28, 2004 Life goes on... Wow, the hustle and bustle of life, and the "bloggers" server that always seem to not work, has led me not to blog for awhile. I know that I am abandoning my readers...so, for that, I apologize. This blog is for the people. Anyways, lately, I have been feeling pretty physically weak. My recurring hip injury has been coming back to bite me these past couple weeks. I hurt it as a freshman in college, during IM basketball, falling on my hip. It switches back and forth between my left and right side. Usually if I work out consistently, using the "hip adductor" machines, doing lower back extensions, and performing my usual slew of cardio exercises (elliptical, stairmaster and bike), the pain doesn't occur. If I sit in a funny position for awhile, it can also flare up. Anyways, I saw a doctor for it two years ago, and I was told to do some physical therapy exercises, and discovered that when I work out enough it is okay. Anyways, while in China, I didn't experience any pain, but as I came back, my right side is hurting quite a bit. It makes me walk funny. I realized last night, that my right knee is swollen, probably from compensating myself for walking. I had to play hurt in the GRX playoffs game last Sunday because my team needed me, and our championship game will be even tougher. I don't know if I will play. I haven't spent so much time in a hot tub than these past two weeks trying to work my muscles back in order. It's a process. Maybe I'm just getting old. However, I still rejoice that in times of pain, I can say that God is still a great God. Thank you God for teaching me again and again this lesson of slowing down. This has forced me to not socialize as much. Mandarin class has been super challenging lately. It's basically rote memory in terms of recognizing characters. It is more challenging than engineering classes for the memorization portion. I have my sharing for my vision tour trip Sat. at my house, so I'm looking forward to sharing with my supporters about the trip. To be honest, I haven't had as much time to process as I like, so I will ultimately share what's on my heart. =P. If you are interested in coming, and didn't see the evite, please let me know. posted by alvin | Thursday, October 28, 2004 Wednesday, October 13, 2004 Update... Sorry for abandoning my readers for these past couple weeks while in China. I have been slowly getting back into the swing of things. As I thought I could overcome jetlag quickly, I have to say, that my body still has not adjusted to everything. Taking much longer that I expected. I worked out for the first time since coming back. As I came back to work, things have been busy. My manager left the company about 1.5 weeks before I left for China, and he actually never said goodbye to me before leaving. It's alright though. Anyways, lots of people in the labs these days, and that's where I am most happy, fixing problems and debugging issues. I sent out my 2nd official board for manufacturing yesterday, so that is exciting. I'll get that back soon, and we'll see if it works. =P. My two personal action items from China. 1. I will go back there to live for at least 1-2 years. When I will go back, I don't know, but it's clear that I will go back there. 2. Mandarin. No more slacking on language study. Will learn Chinese more diligently. I'll provide a more comprehensive update, after I get my bearings together. posted by alvin | Wednesday, October 13, 2004 |
